After months of blisteringly cold days and dry winter air, spring has finally sprung. As the season begins to shift, your skincare routine may be in need of a few seasonal updates as well.
During the cold winter months, when dry, itchy, irritated skin is common, many skincare routines require the use of heavy moisturizers and face oils to stay adequately hydrated. Now, with the milder temperatures and increased humidity levels that often come with spring and early summer, most skin types are naturally able to retain more water.
This means it may be time to swap out your heavy winter moisturizers for something more lightweight–especially if you’re prone to perspiration. When sweat gets trapped under a heavy moisturizer it can end up clogging pores and causing irritation.
If spring means that you’ll begin to spend more time outdoors, you’ll also want to make sure you’re diligent about using daily SPF protection. While sunscreen is a skincare essential all-year-round, it’s especially important to use broad-spectrum protection when UVA and UVB rays are at their strongest.
Below, we’ve highlighted a hydrating springtime skincare routine along with a brief 101 on product layering, a key piece of skincare education that you should know if you want all your products to work as efficiently and effectively as possible.
Why is it important to properly layer skincare?
When products are applied in the correct order they’re able to absorb seamlessly into the skin and work most efficiently, providing powerful benefits and proper protection.
As a general rule of thumb, skincare formulas should be applied to clean skin from lightest to heaviest in texture, with SPF always coming last. Sunscreen needs to be the top layer to properly protect from sun damage.
Heavier products like moisturizers and oil-based serums are designed to lock in moisture, creating a breathable veil on the skin. If you were to apply something like a gel or water-based serum after one of these two products, they would essentially block the serum from being able to penetrate deeply into the upper layers of the skin. Instead, the serum would simply sit on top of the moisturizer or oil, providing minimal benefits.
A Hydrating Skincare Layering Guide for Spring
Below is a step-by-step layering guide to follow as you update your skincare routine for spring. We’ve even highlighted a few Trilipderm essentials that perfectly suit the spring season.
Step 1: Cleanse
You always want to begin your skincare routine with a clean face free of dirt, grime, or makeup. Our multi-tasking Hydrating Exfoliant Cleanser gently removes impurities while it also exfoliates and hydrates.
While some exfoliating products are only designed to be used a few times per week, this formula is gentle enough to be used daily thanks to a unique combination of monton wax and Trilipiderm’s Medasynnian™ Lipid Complex. After the monton wax particles gently polish away dead skin cells, our unique lipid complex moisturizes the skin so that it never feels stripped or dry.
Step 2: Toner
After you’ve cleansed, you can begin to follow the “thinnest to thickest” rule of thumb. If you use a toner, apply this to clean skin and allow it to absorb.
Step 3: Targeted Treatments
Once your toner has absorbed, move onto targeted treatments like eye gels, eye creams, and water or gel-based serums (oil-based serums should be applied later on). These products typically have a high concentration of active ingredients in them (think: retinol, peptides, vitamin C, etc.); so it’s important to apply these before moisturizer or a face oil so that they can absorb properly into the skin to provide the specific benefits you’re looking for.
Step 4: Moisturizer or Face Oil
Once you’ve cleansed, toned, and applied any targeted treatments, it’s time to hydrate and protect the skin with a moisturizer or face oil.
In the morning, reach for a lightweight moisturizer with SPF to hydrate and shield skin from sun damage in one quick step. Our Protective Day Cream with Broad Spectrum SPF 30 combines sun protection with clean ingredients like hyaluronic acid, antioxidant-rich vitamins, meadowfoam seed oil, and Abyssinian oil to powerfully hydrate, protect, and give the skin a radiant morning glow.
At night, try swapping your go-to night cream for a spritz of the Trilipiderm All-Body Serum in the warmer months. This lightweight oil-based serum combines our Skin Cell Science with squalane, and vitamins C and E to deeply hydrate and boost glow without leaving a greasy feel on the skin.
